Palermo suburbs have grown and developed at the expense of becoming isolated from other parts of the city. Ancient boroughs have been eradicated, alongside their urban identities. The challenges of a cosmopolitan and global world are felt even in middle-sized, fringe cities like Palermo, as its suburbs are forced to become tiles of an urban mosaic that is created by urban development. Modālo darbības vārdu un tiem pielīdzināmo vārdu un frāžū lietojums laikrasta rakstos var atklāt rakstnieka attieksmi un viedokli pret paziņotiem faktiem. Šī bakalaura darba mērķis ir analizēt modālo darbības vārduun tiem pielīdzināmo vārdu un frāžū lietojumu laikrakstā „The Guardian”. Metode, kas tika izmantota darbā ir kvantitatīvā un kvalitatīvā analīze. Praktiskā daļa ir balstīta uz 15 rakstu analīzi, kas bija ņemti no laikraksta “The Guardian”. Rezultāti parādīja, ka modālie darbības vārdi, kā arī citi pielīdznināmie vārdi, tiek bieži izmantoti, un tiem irdažādas nozīmes tekstā.
